Everything You Need To Know About Hammer Mills

Hammer mills are industrial equipment used to break or crush materials into small pieces. Basic hammer mills are designed with a rotating shaft where free-swinging hammers are attached and are enclosed in a drum that keeps the system together. A hopper feeds materials to be crushed into the drum which will eventually be crushed by the equipment thru its hammers. The materials are hammered into smaller pieces that are enough to pass through a screen opening adjusted to the desired size of the particles.

Hammer mills are generally used for different industrial applications, agricultural, construction, research and even in residential settings. Hammer mills are designed from small enough to sit on counter tops using household current to large enough equipment that can break and shred an entire vehicle. There are two common axis designs of the rotating shaft of hammer mills, the horizontal and vertical but the latter is more commonly used in different applications.

A hammer mill is typically used in farming and agriculture. The equipment is used to crush grains for feeding livestock and is preferred by users because the output screen can be easily adjusted to different particle size depending on the user’s preference. A hammer mill for agricultural use is operated at 1,800 rpm with the tips of the hammer moving at 90 kph or more. The output for this type of application is even and spherical in shape.

In industrial setting, hammer mills are used for recycling materials and the production of bio-fuel, pulp production for paper and also for stone crushing. Another use of hammer mills is for ethanol production where grains are ground to produce output. During juice production, hammer mills are also utilize in pulverizing fruit. Sawmills also utilize hammer mills to grind scrap to produce mulch and materials for wood pellet fuel production.  A hammer mill is also used in scrap yards for metal recycling.

Smaller hammer mills, on the other hand, are used for grinding materials to be used for experiments in laboratories. They are also utilized in processing food waste and in grinding spices or food products.
